How to count word frequency

  1. Paste a draft or choose Open text file. Files are read locally.
  2. Choose words, two-word phrases, or three-word phrases. Adjust case, number, word-length, or English stop-word filters.
  3. Use Also exclude these words to omit terms separated by spaces, commas, or semicolons.
  4. Search and sort the table. Copy list and Download CSV export all search-matching entries, including rows beyond the display limit.

Counting rules

Unicode letters, combining marks inside words, and numbers are recognized. Accents are kept, canonical accent forms are normalized, and straight or curly apostrophes count alike. Hyphens separate words. No stemming or singular/plural merging is applied.

Sentence punctuation and line breaks stop phrase counting. Other punctuation separates words. Excluding a word removes any phrase containing it; neighboring words are never joined into a new phrase.

Total words and distinct words describe the unfiltered input, with the current case option. Analyzed entries counts words or phrase occurrences remaining after filtering. A term’s share is its count divided by analyzed entries, multiplied by 100.

Exports and limits

Input is limited to 200,000 characters. Selected text files must be smaller than 1 MB and stay within the character limit. The table displays at most 500 matching terms; exports include every match. CSV uses UTF-8 with a byte-order mark for spreadsheet compatibility.

WF02 means the text is over the character limit. WF04 means a selected file cannot be used as plain text. Your current draft is kept when a file fails. Clear retains one draft for Restore previous text in this tab.

These frequencies do not measure keyword search volume or ranking difficulty, and there is no universal target keyword density.
